EARLY START UNFAIR, SAYS FTA

Very easy for people to comment that teachers get the most holidays ????? Well, come and teach in a classroom and do extra hours (30-35 hrs) of corrections or marking or planning that you don't get paid for at all because it's outside the school hours. In Australia, we have 4 school terms and 2 weeks holiday for each terms 1,2,3 and the 4th term is 5 weeks = 11 weeks of holidays. It is against the union and government law for principals in Fiji to call teachers in during the holiday period for planning purposes. In Australia we have allocated a day each term for curriculum planning (a student free day). Teachers are the toughest and hardest working people and they deserve those holidays. Don't stress teachers in Fiji, if you are a member of the FTU -union then protest to this unfair practise by school heads. They cannot force you from your given rights by law

Many other fields work as hard or more hard as teachers. Auditing accounting carpentery and others who get only 20 days leave. Same about university tutors or lecturers. It's a poor argument that teachers should get more holidays coz they work hard. Quality of students is declining and teachers are given more resources when compared to the past. All PSC workers should have same number of holidays. Teachers should report to work for professional development or community service. Tax payers funds should not be wasted on their extensive holidays especially for developing nations
