Gym to help Police combat NCD
Police personnel have a new gymnasium to enhance fitness and health issues – thanks to BSP Life and World Sports for making it possible.
Commissioner of Police BrigadierGeneral Sitiveni Qiliho yesterday opened the gymnasium located at the Fiji Police Force headquarters at Centrepoint, just outside Suva.
Brigadier-General Qiliho was grateful for the sponsorship which is targeted at reducing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) within the force.
An internal report recently highlighted alarming statistics in that 400 officers have been facing the risk of NCDs.
“It is very important for us to get our health and fitness right so that we can deliver that valuable service to the people of Fiji,'' Brigadier-General Qiliho said.
“A healthy person, physically and mentally, will be able to produce the output that the people of Fiji are expecting of us. “Non-Communicable Diseases have been alarming and I had discussions with the Minister for Health. It is not an issue related just to the Fiji Police Force. It is a national issue.
“We had a tour of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital to see the effects of NCDs. I had taken most of my senior officers along who after the visit came up with the realisation of the impact of the NCDs on the lives of the individual and it's affecting the Fiji Police Force.
“The idea of having this gym was initiated by Assistant Commissioner of Poilce Luke Navela.”
