A$4 million housing project that will see 119 residential lots being set up was commissioned yesterday at Koronisalusalu in Tavua.

The Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Bala, while officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony, said Government was delivering on its agenda and that was to provide affordable housing for all.

Mr Bala said Government had empowered Housing Authority to be a one-stop shop for all housing solutions.

“We have made affordable housing a reality to many more Fijians and the priority has been low income earning Fijians,” Mr Bala said.

“I am sure all of this will assist in addressing the growing demand for the housing in the Tavua area and I believe that working together will ensure that people have the home their families’ need, now and for the generations to come.

“We are looking forward to when the developers complete the ground works in 10 months time.”

Mr Bala said there were many issues of lot availability, but the new management was fully equipped to create lots for the people.

“The whole intent for the formation of Housing Authority was to assist poor people especially the workers but as the previous boards and different government came in they all changed their tune,” he said.

“Instead of providing residential lots and they were busy doing other things that are why we have an issue of lots availability.

“We are there and the new board and management are fully equipped in providing lots for the people.” Tui Tavua Nacanieli Uqeuqe said this was an opener for the small town of Tavua and it would certainly attract more businesses. “This development will help meet the housing needs that we have been currently facing.

“This will also get the economy of Tavua up again,” the chief said.
