AChinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Tuesday called on relevant countries to find out the truth in the Skripal case, discard their Cold War mentality and refrain from confrontation.

It was reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday suggested that the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal could benefit the British government by distracting attention from problems around Brexit.

“We have noticed that relevant parties have not reached a universally acknowledged conclusion on the Skripal case,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a regular press briefing.

Mr Geng said Russia has taken equally powerful measures in response to the expulsion of its diplomats from some countries and organisations.

He called on relevant parties to find out the truth as soon as possible, and properly handle differences under the principle of mutual respect and equal co-ordination. Currently, the international community is confronted with multiple challenges, Mr Geng said.

“All parties should discard their Cold War mentality, refrain from confrontation and make concerted efforts to uphold world peace, stability and tranquility, and remain committed to fostering a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice and winwin co-operation.”
