Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau is calling on people affected by the recent floods in the Western Division not to sell the food rations provided by the Government.

Learning from past experiences, he said there were incidents of people who were affected by the floods selling food rations from their homes. “Please don’t sell them, which are the assistance provided by the Government to sustain you for the next two weeks after the devastating floods destroyed your homes,” he said.

“There have been reports previously where people have stocked the food rations in their homes and sold them.

“Most of these people have nothing to survive on, their food rations and belongings were all destroyed in the recent floods.”

He said the food ration packs were meant to assist them on a daily basis as they try to recover from the devastating floods.

“Government’s assistance will be meaningless if they sell the food rations that are for their daily use. It’s not to sell or abuse,” Mr Tagicakibau said.

He also said the distribution of food rations by Government officials were monitored well.

“Every ration is recorded in our books, when it leaves the packaging areas to the distributing areas and right to the flood victims, they are all documented,” Mr Tagicakibau said.
