New comers ready for Coke Games
Participating for the first time at this weekend’s Coca-Cola Games is a dream come true for the 13 students of Yasawa North Secondary School.
The Nacula-based school was established in 2016 and has a student roll of 84. They established their mark during the Maritime Zone on Monday when they took the boy’s title with 7 gold medals, 6 silvers and 8 bronze.
Speaking on behalf of the head coach, Viliame Seru said the trip would certainly go down in their history books. “Some of the students are visiting Suva for the first time and this is something that is very memorable to them,” he said. “We are from a remote island and we hardly hear the buzzing sound like what we encountered here on the mainland. “For us, being here is indeed an eyeopening experience.
“We have been informed about the competition
and we are so privileged to be part of the three-day event. “These are pioneer students given that the school has been established about a year ago and bringing them here is a great start to their career paths.”
Seru said the cyclone disrupted their preparations.
He said most homes were badly affected and many of the athletes were not able to attend training.
“All schools will be participating but we have reduced the number of athletes. Only the cream will take part this weekend.”
Seru said their athletes had been urged to give their best during the Games.
“Battling against top schools will be a big challenge but it will not deter them from giving their best. The athletes are ready for the challenge,” he added.
