Long May Trend of Helping our Nation's Needy Continue

-

The corporatisation of the Fiji Electricity Authority and the setting aside of shares for ordinary Fijians free is another significant initiative to involve them as active participants in our economy.

It’s another fine gesture from a Government that is always finding ways to reach out to all Fijians, particularly those who belong to the lower rung of the socioeconomic ladder.

The corporatisation, which changes the name of the organisation from FEA to Energy Fiji Limited, means the new company now has a capital structure and shares which are wholly owned by the Government. There will be no job losses in the transition. Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the corporatisation was done with the “expansion of clean and renewable energy through the country.”

The shares for ordinary Fijians means that when the company makes a profit, money goes directly to them in the form of a dividend.

Low-income households will benefit immensely from this corporatisation.

This announcement comes on the heels of the CARE for Fiji initiative, which will benefit 150,000 Fijians affected by Tropical Cyclones Josie and Keni.

These initiatives show the emphasis that the FijiFirst Government is placing on trying to help low-incoming earning families get a leg up in life.

They seem to be part of a sustained programme to target the nation’s needy.

People are noticing it and they are responding in a positive way. Long may this trend continue. MARAIA VULA

We're sorry to hear reports that the school was damaged again. We will closely at the Government of Fiji's assessment of damage from Cyclone Keni and any requests for assistance. Dmitri Tarakhovsky US Embassy
