FICAC probes town councils
The audit report on municipal councils for the year ended December 31, 2014, has revealed two serious outstanding issues involving Savusavu and Ba Town councils.
This was revealed in Parliament yesterday after the chairperson of the parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts Ashneel Sudhakar tabled the report. Mr Sudhakar said the report identified audit issues within seven town councils within the audit years 2009-2013.
He said because of the timeframes involved, most issues were resolved. However, he said, Savusavu and Ba Town Councils were identified and referred to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for further investigations. Furthermore, Mr Sudhakar said, the issues raised during the audit process could have been addressed at the time rather than being reported on for a further five to eight years.
He added that it was clear throughout the inquiry that the challenge for councils was to modernise accounting systems on limited resources.
