16-month jail term for theft
A31-year-old man was sentenced to 16 months and one week imprisonment on Wednesday after he was convicted of one count of theft. Samuela Raleba Laulau appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara and was told that a suspension of sentence was not justified in his case. On January 22, 2018, the accused stole a traditional Indian gold wedding neck chain valued at $1500, the property of Dhan Bagium with the intention of permanently depriving Ms Bagium of the same.
The incident happened at 10.30am at the Suva Bus Stand when the 55-year-old woman was trying to board the bus. Laulau pleaded guilty to the charge.
During sentencing Magistrate Wickramasekara said the accused had carefully planned the crime and committed it on the unsuspecting victim in broad daylight.
He said the stolen item was of sentimental value to the victim. For mitigation, the court took into account Laulau’s guilty plea and gave him a three months discount.
Magistrate Wickramasekara said by imprisoning the accused the court was setting a deterrent for other people.
