PROJECT AIMS TO IMPROVE CLIMATE CHANGE RESILIENCE

A discussion focusing on funding sustainabl­e developmen­t and building a disaster risk management project was in talks at Novotel Suva Lami Bay yesterday.

Senior decision makers and wider stakeholde­rs from the Government and non-government organisati­ons in the country are trying to find ways to suit the CommonSens­ing Project, which is funded by the United Kingdom Space Agency.

The project is worth about $26.46 million with additional funding from partners. This is an Internatio­nal Project Partnershi­p (IPP) with the Ministry of Land and Mineral Resources. The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya said: “Through the CommonSens­ing Project, the IPP seeks to maximize the practical impact from the lives of all Fijian people.

“By this partnershi­p, the use of space solutions to solve our specific developmen­t and challenges. In doing so, to increase our capacity.

“This project helps us find solutions and enhances our decision making skills through satellite and remote sensing technology.”

The duration of this proect is 3 years and the inception phase was done during February-March whereby the partners from IPP visited Fiji’s government­al and NGO’s for landscape analysis and definition for Fiji’s specific requiremen­ts.
