PM Ardern Says She Doesn’t Want Her Baby to be Overdue
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has suggested she’s ready to have her baby any day now. Speaking to The AM Show on Tuesday, the Prime Minister joked about having the baby “induced” after she was asked if it’s the last time we’ll be seeing her for a while, as her due date draws near.
“I think so,” she told Duncan Garner, “because next week I’m officially well over.”
Inducing labour is when a healthcare provider uses medicines or other methods to start the labour process early.
This is Ms Ardern’s first baby, and it’s often the case that firstborn babies are overdue. In fact, Live Science reports that there is a 15 to 16 per cent chance of firstborn babies being born late, compared with a 9 or 10 per cent chance for other babies.
But the Prime Minister is determined that her baby won’t be born late.
“I’m not sure I’m gonna let that happen,” she said.
Ms Ardern plans to give birth at Auckland Hospital, details released by the Prime Minister’s office have confirmed.
The birth announcement will be made by Ms Ardern and her partner Clarke Gayford before a formal announcement is released by the Prime Minister’s office. There will be no one-on-one interviews about the birth or any other announcements until after the Prime Minister has given birth. The release asks for some peace and quiet following the birth.
