PM: POLICE TO PATROL ‘STREET OF TERROR’
They call it the “street of terror” in Levuka.
But last night Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said Police would end its notoriety.
He called for more Police patrols after a married woman, Chrystalle Joy Navoka, called for more Police patrols because drunken men terrorised women and children. The issue was raised during the PM’s first talanoa session at the Old Town Hall as he started his Ovalau tour.
Mrs Navoka said: “My first concern is the continuous drinking in public places and residential areas, especially at Vulcan Lane. Our children can no longer play outside due to this and it’s sad to say that there is no Police patrol at all.” Mr Bainimarama said: “I have notified the Police Commissioner.” He added: “It is good to be back in Levuka. I want to come back and talk with you on issues.” Police Commissioner BrigadierGeneral Sitiveni Qiliho said: “I have given a directive to the station officer to make sure officers do patrol the area more often and also to engage the community on how they can deal with it. I have given the lady my number and if there are no changes, she will notify me.”
Former Levuka Town mayor and businessman Bupendra Kumar said: “Your coming here is a testimony of your commitment and dedication to the grassroots people. I can truly say that you are the people’s Prime Minister. You have touched our hearts.”
