Push to unite Pacific businesses in New Zealand
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac, McDonald’s has announced a limited edition global currency-, the MacCoin, will be released worldwide on August 2.
More than 6.2 million MacCoins will be distributed globally, including 50,000 coins in New Zealand.
Customers can share, collect and redeem them for a free Big Mac at participating McDonald’s restaurants in more than 50 countries.
Over the course of its 50 year history, the Big Mac has become an ubiquitous global icon.
So much so, that The Economist even uses it as an international measure of global currency.
The legendary taste of the Big Mac has helped it achieve universal recognition and a lasting legacy.
No matter where they live in the world, Big Mac fans recognise the two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun as the iconic burger with a flavour combination that’s just as craveable and delicious as the day it was introduced.
“This global connectivity of the Big Mac inspired the creation of the MacCoin. The MacCoin transcends currencies to commemorate our global iconic burger while giving customers all over the world a chance to enjoy a Big Mac on us,” says McDonald’s NZ director of marketing Jo Mitchell.
The MacCoin will be available in five collectible designs, each representing a decade of the Big Mac.
Each MacCoin design pulls in elements from that time in history, nodding to art, music and pop culture, while the front-side of the MacCoin celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac.
MacCoin has no cash value and is only redeemable for one free Big Mac at participating McDonald’s restaurants during 2018.
