Ex-Waiqele Primary Students Help School With Furniture
The New Zealandbased club provided 15 desks and 15 chairs worth $1350 for Year 6 students.
ANew Zealand-based group of former Fijian residents has come to the aid of Waiqele Primary School in Labasa. Called Fiji Relief 2000 the club, made up of 17 former Fiji citizens, provided 90 needy students with stationery in May this year.
The club has now provided 15 desks and 15 chairs worth $1350 for Year 6 students. Girja Nand, a member of the club and former student of this school, said the members collectively decided on the assistance after numerous meetings to assist the school’s need. “During my visit to the school this year with a book donation I realised the students in Year 6 needed new furniture,” Mr Nand said.
“I feel it is very important to give back to the school that once equipped us with knowledge to enable us to be where we want to be in life.
“If we all ex-students reach out and help the schools, I am sure the present generation will see and carry the same attitude and hence be of great help to the Ministry of Education in future.” Waiqele Primary School headteacher Suresh Chand said the school bought new desks and chairs for Year 7 and Year 8 this year from the Ministry of Education grant provided, but they were in desperate need to change furniture for Year Six.
“We are very grateful to the club and Mr Nand for their assistance,” Mr Chand said.
“Our school having a student roll of 154 and ten teachers located 15 kilometres away from Labasa Town accommodates students who are mostly from a farming background.
“For Year 6 students this assistance will boost their morale to do their best in their school work.”
