Waste management in Fiji would be more manageable if people joined hands in the preservation of the environment, says a Cabinet minister.

Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Jone Usamate said this meant that all waste generated from our individual household must be disposed of properly and effectively. He said this would ensure the preservation of our environment and prevent the pollution of our roads, creeks, rivers and back yards. Mr Usamate made the comments during the crowning of the 2018 Vodafone Millennium Sinu Festival last Saturday. He was chief guest at the event.

“Each and every household must ensure that our trash is properly taken care of with the rubbish pick up programme by Nasinu Town Council,” he said.

“Fiji is currently taking leadership in the Conference of Parties (COP) 23 Summit which means that it is highly important to highlight the need to raise awareness and practicing on the importance of proper waste management at all levels of our society.

“Nasinu is fortunate that the Government of the day has placed the municipality as the first in the country to have kitchen waste collection on daily basis from Monday to Friday.

“Now it is your responsibility to ensure that your kitchen waste is put out for collection. And assist the Ministry of Waterways which is progressing towards clearing our rivers, creeks and drains,” Mr Usamate said. He urged the people of Nasinu not to throw their rubbish in rivers, creeks and drains, but put them in the right place.
