Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma president Epineri Vakadewavosa described as alarming the high number of Methodists and incarcerated at corrections institutions around the country.

It is a concern that was discussed during the at the Centenary Methodist Church in Suva yesterday.

“Another matter of concern is the rising number of inmates at corrections institution in the country. We are working very closely with the Commissioner and his team,” Reverend Vakadewavosa said.

“Last week they conducted a symposium involving all the senior ministers and superintendents who discussed ways and means in which we can work together effectively.”

Reverend Vakadewavosa said reducing the number of and Methodists in prisons was one of their priorities. “We are trying very hard in our partnership to reduce the high number of our people in corrections institutions,”he said.

“The Methodist Church of Fiji and the Fiji Corrections Servicve are working towards that in the mission of the church to proclaim the good values and works displayed by Jesus Christ.

“Our divisional circuits will work with the corrections institutions near them to bring down the alarming rate, particularly with the Methodist and the

in the corrections institutions.” He however, noted that the best teachings started at home.

“We were told about the reality of the situation and how we can help to decrease the rate of crimes by the Commissioner,” Reverend Vakadewavosa

said.

“He came with a clear picture of what we can do.

“We have also asked our members to work closely with the Fiji Police Force and see how we can help our people in the church to respect the law and be good, responsible citizens.

“I think it goes back to the families. I think the families must be responsible in the carrying and nurturing of our children.

“If we want to have a good life then there is a lot for the families to contribute.

“The church is there to support the families and will continue to preach the message of the importance of the families in enhancing the lives of our people, especially the young.”
