team thrash Vanuatu 5-1 in 2018 OFC Women’s Nations Cup
The Vodafone Fijian women’s football team thrashed Vanuatu 5-1 in the 2018 OFC Women Nations Cup (OFCWNC) Qualifier at Churchill Park,Lautoka yesterday.
The Marika Rodu– coached side avenged the 1-2 loss in the final of the Pacific MiniGames in Port Vila, Vanuatu last year And Trina Davis, 16, from Washington D.C, United States made a grand debut, scoring three goals.
What happened: The Fijians started attacking right from the first whistle.
It was a moment of excitement for Luisa Tamanitoakula as she scored the first goal for Fiji in the 6th minute, 1-0.
The Fijians took control and set-up multiple scoring opportunities.
And they finally extended the lead in the 41st minute with a classic goal scored by striker Davis.
Halftime: Vanuatu 0 –2 Fiji Vanuatu started the second half on a high note but the side was unable to secure any goal. In the 55th minute, Davis scored a sensational goal extending Fiji’s lead 3-0. She scored her hat-trick in the 56th minute to the delight of the crowd, 4-0.
The Fijians continued their dominance as Cema Nasau scored in the 60th minute, 5-0. Vanuatu’s Annie Gere came off the bench to score in the 75th minute, 5-1.
Big Play: Davis was brilliant for Fiji.
Comments: Fiji coach Marika Rodu said:
“The girls did what they were instructed to do and we are all happy to start with a win.” Vanuatu coach George Kalo said: “We did not play as planned but I still think our girls can play their best in the coming matches.”
