Aishwarya Rai Gets Meryl Streep Award for Excellence
Janhvi Kapoor was also honoured by the Women in Film and Television (WIFT) India along with writer-director Zoya Akhtar.
Washington: Bollywood actresses Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Janhvi Kapoor were honoured by the Women in Film and Television (WIFT) India on September 8, 2018.
The inaugural WIFT India award function took place in Washington, DC, USA, alongside the South Asian Film Festival (SAFF) 2018. Director Zoya Akhtar was also honoured by the organisation that is a collective of women in showbiz and a part of WIFT International. Aishwarya was honoured with the Meryl Streep Award for Excellence for her contribution to cinema, for “distinction in her craft and for expanding the role of women within the entertainment industry”, according to WIFT India.
The former Miss World made her film debut with a Tamil film and went on to act in blockbuster Bollywood commercial films as also some meaningful cinema.
She has also done crossover films and starred in Hollywood in The Pink Panther 2 and in
Gurinder Chadha’s Bride and Prejudice. Aishwarya was recently seen in the film Fanney
Khan. At the WIFT India awards ceremony, Aishwarya wore a mermaid style black and golden dress that flaunted her figure.
The actress and mother was accompanied by her daughter Aaradhya Bachchan and her mother at the function. Aishwarya shared pictures from the event on her Instagram.
As the actor received the award in Washington DC with her daughter in tow, husband Abhishek Bachchan wrote a tweet for Aishwarya. Abhishek tweeted, “And the Mrs is awarded the Meryl Streep award for excellence at WIFT. The little one gives her a congratulatory hug, and I look on (to the photo) a very proud husband!” Abhishek is promoting his film Manmarziyaan at present.
Other recipients
Janvhi Kapoor who made her Bollywood debut in 2018 with Dhadak and was appreciated for her performance by audiences and critics, received the award for best debut - the WIFT Emerald award.
