Court Grants Soldier Bail

Asoldier charged with one count of attempted murder was granted bail by the High Court in Suva yesterday. The accused appeared before High Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe for his bail hearing. The accused is alleged to have attempted to drown his partner while swimming in Colo-i-Suva pool after they agreed to go for an early morning swim on September 15, 2018.

A team of Police officers heard the woman’s cry for help and managed to save her and arrested the accused.

The complainan­t had sustained injuries during the alleged incident.

The accused was represente­d by lawyer Gavin O’Driscoll while the State was represente­d by Office of the Director of Public Prosecutio­ns lawyer, Taitusi Tuenuku. The accused was granted bail on the sum of $1000 personal bond and two sureties.

He was ordered by the court not to interfere or contact the complainan­t and not to interfere with any of the prosecutio­n witnesses.

He will be residing in Nadi. The accused was ordered to report to the Nadi Police Station every Thursday and Saturday between 6am and 6pm.

He was also ordered not to obtain any travel documents or to travel out of the country.

He was also ordered not to reoffend while on bail and not change his residentia­l address without the approval of court.

The matter was adjourned to October 24, for mention.
