Taekwondo reps win 20 medals in NZ
The Francis Nand-coached Fiji Taekwondo team returned home with a record 20 medals from New Zealand Union Taekwondo Championship at the Te Raupraha Arena in Wellington last weekend.
The side raked in 5 gold medals, 10 silvers and 5 bronze surpassing last year’s tally of 10 medals.
“As officials we are proud of our athletes calibre to achieve such a feat,” Nand said.
“Before we left we were aiming for 16 medals but we have surpassed that. It’s a history that Asia Pacific Taekwondo Federation in Fiji is taking so many athletes overseas to take part in competitions and have won.
“This was our second participation in the competition. We encountered tough competition from our counterparts from New Zealand and Australia but it is good for Fiji as whole and a good exposure for 2019 Pacific Games.” Nand was overwhelmed with the performance of Olivia Likusiga, Faiaza Nisha and 12-year-old Adul Sahil who all came from Ba.
“They did well in this international tournament winning medals for the association. We also thank all parents who supported the athletes.”
University students Prabhat Prasad and Akshay Achari also set a New Zealand record in the high front kick with a four 4-metre high kick.
The oldest rep in the side is Jone Senimoli, 52, of Wainibuku while the youngest Shahil is the youngest
