Debuting at the International Secondary School Chef Challenge at the Gold Coast in Australia, the Fiji Airways-Outrigger Fiji School Culinary team won bronze during the cooking competition last weekend.
The team was represented by Sigatoka Andhra College Year 12 students Yash Singh and Ratu Ovini Bokini. They distinguished themselves at the local cooking competition – the Outrigger Fiji ‘School’s Chef Challenge – where Yash was named 2018 School Chef of the Year and Ratu Ovini won the gold medal.
As winners of this local competition, they were selected to compete in the International Secondary School Chef Challenge in Australia.
Not only did they win bronze, they also won the Best Team Award for their well organised group.
They were accompanied by their home economics teacher Arti Sharma and Outrigger Chef Priya Darshani as the team mentor.
Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort executive chef Shailesh Naidu said: “This is another mile stone to send a first ever ‘Fiji School Culinary Team’ to the international culinary event.
“I also have to acknowledge the Principal and teachers of Sigatoka Andhra Sangam College for their great support and allowing students and teacher to participate in this event.”
The event, hosted by the Australian Culinary Federation, is also an educational experience for students wanting a career in hospitality.
