Who's who in the legal fraternity

The following are some high-profile legal pratitione­rs who attended the two-day Fiji Law Society Annual Convention:

Atunaisa Siwatibau:

Mr Siwatibau joined the legal profession in 1996 and started practising law in New Zealand. He practised commercial law for seven years in New Zealand specialisi­ng in mergers and acquisitio­ns before moving back to Fiji in 2003. He started his law firm Siwatibau and Sloan in 2005 and employs nine lawyers in his firm. Mr Siwatibau finds the legal profession interestin­g and says that it is currently in a state of change where there is a big pull of whether it is a profession or is a service.

Seruwaia Nayacalevu-Masi:

Mrs Masi started practising law in

2009 at the AttorneyGe­neral’s Chambers where she worked for two years. She joined Shekinah Law in 2011 and practices criminal defence, family law and civil litigation. She shared that the law profession was interestin­g in that lawyers were constantly learning new things on a daily basis and all cases they deal with were unique.

Jiten Singh:

Former High Court judge Justice Jiten

Singh started practing law in

1977 and is now a Law lecturer at the University of Fiji. He also sits on the General Court Martial for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces as a judge advocate. Mr Singh said the challenges for the legal profession were much higher now because of the way the entire legal field has grown over the years and there was a need for specialisa­tion.

Ami Kohli:

Mr Kohli from Labasa has been practising law for 34 years. He has his own law firm called Kohli and Singh. He advises young lawyers to be dedicated to their work and be prepared to work hard, and if in doubt find out. He also advises lawyers not to be scared to ask fellow practition­ers for assistance.
