Times misled public again: Saneem
The has come under criticism again for an inaccurate report. Going into the General Election, it is now time that Fijians realise what is the credibility of when they are publishing such information with the deliberate attempt “as I see it” to mislead the public, Mohammed Saneem said. The Supervisor of Elections has again corrected the inaccuracy of a report that was published by on its Friday’s edition with the headline
The article stated that “Seventy-nineyear-old Ratu Suluo Draunibaka missed out on his chance to vote yesterday because his name was not present in the voters’ register at Namarai, Nakorotubu, Ra. “Upon inquiring with the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) officials, Mr Draunibaka said he was told his name was listed in another pre-polling station."
It further stated that Mr Draunibaka was informed that he was supposed to cast his vote at Saioko, Lawaki, more than 10 kilometre from Namarai.
Mr Saneem said as usual, the FEO checked out the registration record of this voter and found that the voter first registered at Saioko Village tent on July 18, 2012.
He updated his details on May 30, 2017 to vote at Namarai community hall.
He then made another update on June 24 2017 to vote at Saioko village hall number 3. On August 6, 2017, the voter again updated his details to vote Saioko Village hall.
“This voter has in fact amended his details to vote at Saioko Village hall which is a proper FEO pre-polling station,” he said.
Mr Saneem stated that if had sought clarification, the FEO would have clearly showed them the voter’s registration details.
“If you would have asked the FEO, we would have clearly told you that the voter chose to change his venue from Namarai to Saioko and we would have given you the exact dates.
“We noted that when we clarified things for the editor comes out and calls us as ‘attacking but I think it’s a very good time for the editor to look deep into his own institution and see why they continue to sensationalise news as well as make false news.” Questions were sent to the Editor of
Fred Wesley, yesterday, but there was no response when this edition went to press.
