One-hundred students from 20 high schools in the Central Division will be the first to benefit from the School Employment Exposure Programme (SEEP) launched yesterday by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations. The programme is a result of the National Employment Policy, which was launched on August 30 this year.

Students will be given placements at various companies identified under the programme and undergo training for a week.

The programme takes place from November 26 to December 21, 2018.

Permanent Secretary for Employment Salaseini Daunabuna said the policy was integral to achieving the Fijian Government’s vision to transform Fiji into a modern and dynamic economy.

“The policy is based on the notion of moving Fiji forward… a policy that realises an access to jobs is the key way to ensure that the benefits of growth are more clearly shared among us,” Ms Daunabuna said. She said the type of employment that youths secure was also crucial adding that the first priority of the national employment policy was to create a clear pathway for young people from education to productive employment. “That pathway must be realistic and be one that stakeholders can confidently say had a hand in crafting the current and future generations of Fiji,” she said. International Labour Organisa- tion director for the Pacific, Donglin Li, said they had initiated a global programme to promote equality to access to decent and quality employment.

He said their concern about youth employment was also shared by all governments, including job creation.
