ANZ Boosts Top Chinese Card, Technology

- CHARLES CHAMBERS

ANZ yesterday announced it will introduce contactless technology to its EFTPOS terminals across Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste for UnionPay cardholders.

Speaking at a launch event in Fiji, ANZ Fiji Country Head, Saud Minam, said: “UnionPay is the leading card network throughout China.

“With the number of Chinese tourists and business people visiting Fiji and the Pacific increasing every year, it’s important we provide more convenient and secure ways of paying for products and services. “Chip technology and contactless payments are fast becoming the global standard for card security, because it is harder for card details to be fraudulently copied than olderstyle cards where information was stored on a magnetic strip.

“As the market leader in the Pacific, ANZ will continue to deliver new digital initiatives for our customers.”

UnionPay Chairman, Ge HuaYong, said: “Fiji is a popular travel destination for Chinese tourists.

“As the preferred payment brand for Chinese people, UnionPay aims to provide safe and convenient payment services to our cardholders visiting the country.

“Our deepened partnership with ANZ, our significant partner in the Asian-Pacific region will give our cardholders better payment experience while bring more customers to local merchants, thus realise a win-win result.”

UnionPay cardholders can already make contactless payments at ANZ’s EFTPOS terminals and ATMs in Australia and New Zealand.

ANZ welcomes commitment to help Pacific Island producers meet global demand

Meanwhile, ANZ’s Regional Executive for the Pacific, Tessa Price, on Monday welcomed the New Zealand government’s commitment to the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access (PHAMA) Plus programme.

“Any initiative that helps Pacific Island producers meet global demand is welcomed.

“As I travel to rural communities across the Pacific, I see abundant fertile land, undertapped agriculture and fishing industries, and a young, willing population.

“As we outlined in our recent economic report on Pacific Island countries, a richer Asia is providing opportunity for growth. “Exports play a key part in supporting this growth, as it brings income and broadens the economic base which will support jobs.

“This NZ-Australia initiative will focus on productivity improvements and enhancing product quality.

“This is sensible; there’s no point in creating external demand if you cannot meet it or supply the products.

“It can be hard to navigate regulatory requirements, manage cash flow and stay on top of the day to day work. “Our own MoneyMinded Business Basics program has been delivered to more than 600 participants in the Pacific, helping give people the knowledge, skills and experience to establish their own profitable and sustainable businesses.

“But we know there is still more work to be done.”

UnionPay aims to provide safe and convenient payment services to our cardholders visiting the country.
