Year 13 student of Shri Gurunanak Khalsa Secondary, Labasa, who has become the latest drowing victim was excited about his sister getting married this weekend.

Sahil Prasad was building a shed for the big day when he and his friends decided to go swimming afterwards.

His father had told him not to go, but he pushed for it because it had been a long and hot day.

Father, Sushil Chand, 43, described the avid soccer player as a loving and an enthusiastic person. “He was always smiling and was actively doing things. There was never a dull moment with him,” said Mr Chand.

“I still can’t believe that my son is gone and everything feels just so unreal right now.

“It was around 3pm on Sunday last week when Sahil decided to go for a swim with his friends after a long day at home making a shed for his sister’s wedding scheduled for this weekend.

“He had been really excited because his elder sister was getting married.

“But he wanted to go for a swim with his friends and something in me told me to stop him.

“I told him to stay at home with me and our family,” he said.

His sister, Shinal Prasad, 23, told of his excitement of seeing her after a long time.

“He carried my luggage to the house and we couldn’t talk much as everyone was busy in preparation for the wedding,” she said. “He was smiling all the way and I could tell he was really happy to see me back at home,” she said. She said that she had seen her brother after three months. Mr Chand said: “Suddenly someone called me on my phone and said that my son had been admitted to the hospital because he had not been feeling well.

“The caller told me that my son had drank some water and that they had brought him directly to the hospital.

“When I saw him at the hospital, he was already gone,” he said. “He was really happy and I could tell that he was really looking forward to the wedding.

“He had so much love for soccer and always used to share with me that he would make it to the national side one day,” he said.
