Sacrificing sleep for study in the early hours of the morning has paid off for Dilkusha Girls School Dux, Adi Talatoka Naimoce Wainiqolo.

Relieved that it was all worth it, Adi Talatoka said she would also sacrifice her recess and lunch breaks in order to revise her notes.

On Wednesday, Adi Talatoka not only walked away with the Dux award, but she also bagged 1st prize in her class, the PEMAC prize, Top Social Science scorer in the Fiji Eighth Year Exam (FEYE) and was the school’s highest scorer in the exam. The lass from Lomanikoro Village dedicated her success to her class Year 8Z, her teacher Vani Senibaravi and family.

“I worked very hard to achieve my goals and I thank my parents for their constant support in my studies,” said the 13-year-old.

“It was because they encouraged me to work hard.

“The girls in my class inspire me a lot because I spent most of my time with them and we help each other to better understand the syllabus.”

Adi Talatoka also received a cash prize of $100 from her class teacher Mrs Senibaravi, who had challenged her class earlier in the year that she would reward $50 to the Dux recipient and another $50 to the top scorer in the FEYE.

“Students should be willing to work hard if they want to achieve something. When they do that, then anything is possible,” Adi Talatoka said. For the Dux award, the competition was tough and Adi Talatoka managed to beat her classmate, Lisa Uluivuya by only one mark.

“All the Year 8 girls were very competitive which was good for everyone.” She acknowledged God for sustaining her life and her parents for their never ending support.

Her father, Ratu Alifereti Doviverata said: “She reaped what she sowed and I’ve been reminding her to remain humble and to continue to set her goals and work towards it.”

Adi Talatoka currently aims to be a successful entrepreneur in the future.
