MONITOR KIDS ONLINE ACTIVITY, PARENTS TOLD

-

Parents and guardians at a primary school in Labasa were reminded by the Police to supervise their children who have access to smart phones and the internet.

And statistics released by the Police revealed that from 2012 to 2018, there have been 17 successful conviction of cyber crimes cases.

Police Cyber Crime Unit investigating officer Sergeant Nilesh Kumar advised parents at Bulileka Sanatan Dharm Primary School while officiating at the annual prizegiving ceremony.

He clarified that gadgets and technology were not bad for students. “It is the means of communication and easy access for parents, especially those who are working to check on their children,” Sergeant Kumar said.

“It is an important tool to connect with your children, but you need to teach your children how to use it responsibly.

“Moreover, supervise your children when they use gadgets and technology.” He advised parents to always keep a tab on what their children were doing and to be worried if they acted in a “suspicious manner”.

“I told the students that if they use it wisely, they will gain knowledge. If they misuse it than they are getting themselves into trouble,” Sergeant Kumar said.

He said a cybercrime unit was established because of the growing trend of crimes using technology and the internet.

“We know the life of a student is governed by technology now. The Fiji Police Force is making every effort to protect our people and communities around them.”

Meanwhile, the Police Cyber Crime Unit is working closely with the Ministry of Education to conduct more awareness. SHRATIKA NAIDU
