Jasmine Grace Fong has set her sights on a career in either architecture or engineering when she leaves school. She took a step towards that dream when she was awarded the Dux prize at the Holy Trinity Anglican School prizegiving ceremony at Suva’s Jai Narayan College Hall this week.

The 13-year-old, who is also the school’s headgirl, received the subject award for mathematics.

“I had a lot of competition this year, but I had faith in myself and God,” she said.

“Being headgirl was a big responsibility and at times it was difficult to balance studies with responsibilities in school and at home,” she added.

Jasmine also explained her career choice.

“I heard that not a lot of women go into those fields and I want to change that,” she said.

“I hope it inspires other girls to do the same.

“I like drawing and sketching designs so I think I will enjoy it.” She draws inspiration from her mother, Ruth Fong, whom she considers a role model for her resilience and strength.

“My mum has gone through a lot, but she still manages to smile,” said Jasmine.

“She had a lot of expectations of me and that pushed me to work hard despite the challenges.” With an aggregate mark of 474/500 in the Fiji Year Eight Examinations she will join Yat Sen Secondary School next year.
