Kritika Nand of Vunika, Labasa, dropped out of primary school because of financial difficulties.

This was after her father died. Over the years she harboured a desire to return to school, but never did get the opportunity to do so. With the support of her husband and in-laws she graduated with a Certificate in Culinary course at the Fiji Muslim League Makoi Women’s Vocational Training Centre yesterday.

“When my father passed away I had to leave school because there was no one to pay my fees.

“I wish free education was introduced during my time. I would have utilised it to the best of my ability,” Ms Nand said. “When I look at some of the children I studied with working, I feel hurt. How I wish there was another way I could have paid my fees back then.

“Children of today must work hard because everything is provided for them. They have no excuse for not completing their education.” Ms Nand said her family was supportive of her decision to attend Fiji Muslim League Makoi Women’s Vocational Training Centre. “My husband and in-laws understood when I told them about the Fiji Muslim League Makoi Women’s Vocational Training Centre,” she said.

“They supported my idea of trying to do better and improve myself. I don’t speak in English, but I still try. Attending Fiji Muslim League Makoi Women’s Vocational Training Centre encouraged me to try to speak in English. They didn’t make fun of me when I made a mistake and I am thankful for that.”

She was one of the 23 students who graduated with a Certificate in Culinary course.
