Sniper: I’m Fighting for Fiji

Boxer Sebastian ‘Sniper’ Singh is confident of a good outing against New Zealand’s Bowyn Morgan on December 15 in Christchurch

The two meet at Horncastle Arena in a Joseph Parker vs Alexander Flores welterweight undercard, in what is the 24-year-old Singh’s biggest career fight.

Up for grabs is the Pro Box New Zealand Welterweight Title.

Singh says he is going to New Zealand to represent Fiji and is eyeing a win against his more experienced opponent.

“I have to be on top of my game because I am fighting New Zealand’s number one welterweight in his home country,” Singh said. “Morgan is a very good pressure fighter who throws a lot of punches and has a high work rate. As for me, I’m a big puncher; I like to look for gaps through which I can land big shots.” The New Zealand boxer has won all but one of his 19 fights, with a 42 per cent knockout rate. (18W,1L).

In contrast, Singh has won 11 times in 14, losing twice and drawing one, with a knockout rate of over 50 per cent (11W,2L, 1D).

Finding quality sparring partners to train with has posed a challenge to Singh’s camp. Singh has been sparring with Joseph Kwadjo and middleweight boxer Malakai Marama in preparation for the fight.

The Suva boxer wants to win the fight not only as a personal achievement, but also to inspire more support for the sport as a whole locally.

“I also want to inspire the younger generation of boxers in Fiji,” he said.

“I think the development of boxing in Fiji is not as good as it can be. I really believe that with more support, our boxers can win more medals overseas and put Fiji on the boxing map.

“I can’t say for sure if I’ll knock him out because boxing is such an unpredictable sport but I can guarantee for sure there’s no way in the world I’m getting knocked out.”
