Volunteers need to be recognised for their effort for a noble cause says Vodafone Fiji Limited, Head of Commerce and Corporate Affairs, Shailendra Prasad.

Speaking at the International Volunteer Day celebration held at the Vodafone Headquarterst his week, Mr Prasad said anyone could be a volunteer.

“I wish to highlight one thing that probably is a misconception about volunteers. That is that volunteers are people who do not have a job, who have spare time on their hand and just want to look busy. This is not volunteering,” Mr Prasad said.

“A volunteer could be anybody, even the Prime Minister or the president of the country who takes out time for a noble course because they value human dignity. “These volunteers need to be recognised for their genuine effort for a noble cause to make a difference in others’ lives.” Volunteer Selita Donu said volunteers were good Samaritans and she joined Vodafone World of Difference are a Think Global and Act Local volunteer programme last year and never regretted.

“We are always there for the voiceless, we are always out there for the community,” Ms Donu said.

“It is all about doing the work we are passionate about. I am passionate about helping people. Doing little for the communities means a lot to them. “Being a volunteer means a lot to me.”
