Police are advising the general public to drink responsibly after two separate freak accidents involving people falling from two-storey buildings in the past week.

Director operations Senior Superintendent of Police Abdul Khan said: “The first incident was recorded in Nasese where two men and a woman fell from the second floor of an apartment where they were attending a party.

“The railings of the balcony allegedly gave away resulting in the accident. All are aged in their 50s and are currently admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.” SSP Khan said the second incident happened yesterday.

“In the second incident a man in his 40s fell from the double story building.

“The victim was allegedly drinking alcohol with workmates and was leaning against the railing when he accidentally fell over. “Victim sustained injuries and is currently admitted at the CWM Hospital where he is receiving treatment.” Investigation of both cases is underway.

Monitoring clubs

Meanwhile, SSP Khan said they were closely monitoring nightclubs to see that ID cards were checked and no minors were entering.

It was brought to the attention of the Fiji Sun that some night clubs in Suva were allowing minors into the nightclubs. Director operations SSP Abdul Khan said they would take necessary action if the need arises.

“The checking of ID’s is the responsibility of nightclub security personnel and the operators are aware of that,” SSP Khan said. “If we find minors who are being sold alcohol then we will take necessary action however the responsibility lies first and foremost with the security personnel.”
