Teachers and parents invest in cultural day for the students
The students of Lami Primary School were able to know more about themselves during their Cultural Week which ended on Friday.
The theme for the event was ‘Meu Kilai Au Mada’ (Self Identity).
Students displayed artefacts that their provinces are known for. Teacher in-charge Savaira Tabuaniviti said it was the first time for the school to celebrate Culture Day their diverse culture and traditions.
“Teachers from different provinces taught the children what the provinces were known for. We want the children to know more about themselves, where we come from and our position in the vanua.
“This is important because we have noticed that some of the children have very little knowledge of their culture,” Ms Tabuaniviti said.

“We noticed that their English marks can be high and their iTaukei subject can be their lowest mark. We want to try and balance the two. We also want to strengthen the knowledge of how to make Fijian artefacts.
“We are hoping to make this a term thing. The parents have been very supportive. This motivates the children to learn about themselves. We learn about other countries and yet we fail to know about our own.”
Parent, Merewai Bulou, said she was happy that her child could learn more about himself from an early age.
“I believe that it is important for us to teach our children our culture. iTaukei are blessed with a unique culture and it is important that we pass the knowledge down to our children so that we can preserve it,” Ms Bulou said.
“I thank the teachers for coming up with this idea of having Culture Day where the children represent their province.”
