Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Defence Major General (Ret’d) Ioane Naivalurua officially opened the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) capital projects in Naboro yesterday.

The PS commissioned the new training classroom for the FCS Academy and the opening of the new dog kennel for the FCS K9Unit in Naboro together with the Nasinu and Labasa unit. Commissioner of the FCS, Commander Francis Kean acknowledged the support given by the Government as it will be a vital component to the work provided at the Corrections Service. “We want to acknowledge and thank the Government for providing us with the necessary funding to complete our capital projects as the classrooms will enhance the delivery of our training to our officers,” said Mr Kean. “Having the proper settings and proper environment will be conducive to learning and enhancing

the learning attitude for those that attend the relevant courses that are delivered by our staff at the training academy.”

The classroom took 12 weeks to complete with a budget cost of $108,000.

Moreover, the opening of the new K9-Unit will specifically be for breeding Labradors Retriever dogs as the K9s play a very important role for the Fiji Corrections Service.

“Labrador dogs will help us in all our entry points in all our correction centres as you are aware there tends to be an increase in the smuggling of contrabands into our correctional centres,” he said. “And by having these capabilities, these Labrador dogs hopefully will be a deterrent and also prevent and reduce the smuggling of contrabands into our respective correctional centres.”

The K9 projects in Naboro, Nasinu and Labasa along with a few renovations took 20 weeks to complete with a cost of $495,000. Edited by Susana Tuilau
