Amillion dollar island resort will soon open in the Northern Division. Mahebuba Island Resort has been bought by an American, Adam Kirchner, who is currently residing in California, United States of America.

The general manager of the resort, Atish Chand, a Labasa resident, has confirmed that the island was bought by Mr Kirchner 15 years ago when he used to visit Vanua Levu with his family. “Initially Mr Kirchner and his business partner whom I know by the name Mahebuba bought the island,” Mr Chand said. “Unfortunately, Mr Mahebuba passed away and Mr Kirchner now wants to fulfil his dream.

That is why the island resort is named after him.

“The island is about one hour and ten minute boat rides from Labasa Town,” he said.

“It is located behind Nukubati Island Resort and opposite Macuatai-Wai

island in Macuata Province.

The other alternative route is by land.

Tourists and locals can hire a van and travel from Labasa Town to Namukadogo Village and then catch a boat, which will take you 25 minutes to reach the island.

“The initial stages of work have been done on the island three months ago such as acquiring of relevant documents, land survey and design,” Mr Chand said. “Next month the second phase of work will be done, such as the markings as the plan is to build seven villas.

This would cost around $500,000.

Once the island resort is ready it would generate employment for nearby villages from the main land and provide more options for tourists to experience new things in the North.”
