ASIA-PACIFIC CHAMPS
BOWLERS AIM HIGH
The Fijian men and women’s bowls teams aim to win medals and make their mark at this year’s AsiaPacific Championships in Brisbane, Australia.
The championships is from
June 18-28.
The 12- member team, made-up of 10 players and two officials, have been preparing all year for the competition and will also use it as a build-up to next month’s Pacific Games in Apia Samoa.
They will be up against top bowling nations like Australia, Canada, China, New Zealand, the USA and more.
Team manager Ratish Lal says, they will not go to Brisbane just to make up the numbers.
“In this particular championship, we have won gold before and we’ve won numerous silver and bronze medals as well. This time around we are also targeting medals, not just bronze or silver,” Lal said.
“We had a professional coach, Maurice Symes from New Zealand, working with the team during the trials and after the players were selected.”
Lal added that he was thankful for Government’s support in providing funding for the team through the Fiji National Sports Commission.
Veteran players Litia Tikoisuva and David Aitcheson will lead the women’s and men’s teams respectively.
The men’s team also has two new players in Kushal Pillay and Rajnesh Prasad, who both joined in 2015.
The team depart for Australia today.
