Marking 80th year of the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union Deans Trophy competition, Eastern Zone schools are vying to finish on top of the competition.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Eastern Zone president Solomone Seru said after the completion of round two some upcoming schools have lifted their performance. “This year marks the 80th year of the competition and the hype among schools participating in the Eastern zone is on a high,” Seru said.

“I have noticed over the past two weeks of competition that some not so prominent schools are giving tough competition to top schools like RKS (Ratu Kadavulevu School) and QVS (Queen Victoria School).” Seru also acknowledged the time, hardwork, and dedication invested by teachers after school hours in preparing these students for the weekly competition.

“Teachers have been playing a very important role over the years in the development of these young players for the weekly competitions,” Seru added.

“These teachers have

sacrificed their personal family time on Saturdays just to prepare a player that represent the school, really shows the level support for the sport in developing it from a younger age.

“We are also grateful to our major sponsors Vodafone for enabling the reimbursement of travelling expenses with the schools in the Eastern Zone which has been a great help for schools that travel on weekly basis.” Meanwhile, in the second round of the U18 competition QVS beat Lelean Memorial School 8-3 while RKS escaped with a 22-20 win over St John’s College in Cawaci, Ovalau on Tuesday.
