CAR NUMBER PLATE SCAM?

-

BTL is asking whether there is a car number plate scam. Two recent incidents have prompted this question. In the first case, there was an alleged robbery at a residence. The CCTV camera in the premises captured footage of the getaway vehicle. It is understood that during the Police investigations it was discovered that the number plate belonged to a taxi driver who had turned in the number plate to the Land Transport Authority because he had received a new one. In the second case, a vehicle was written off after it was involved in an accident. The vehicle was in a Police station compound, but the number plate was later allegedly spotted on two different cars in separate sightings. LTA and the Police were both notified. An official at the LTA office in Valelevu says they need evidence before they can act. It is not clear whether plates no longer needed are returned to the LTA or destroyed by the owners. Are these two cases isolated ones or part of an alleged scam?
