University of Fiji academic Litiana Kuridrani was stood down from her position as Director for the Centre of iTaukei Studies pending investigations into her comments, telling a student to stop barking “like an Indian dog”.

There are a few things that need to be examined here. Ms Kuridrani is not only an academic. She is also the spouse of a Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) Member of Parliament Inosi Kuridrani.

While there had been justification that this was not a racist remark, including National Federation Party (NFP) leader Biman Prasad who is on record saying that this comment should not be blown out of proportion, there is a real need to examine this comment.

If one is to look closely at what Mr Kuridrani’s contribution in Parliament has been, one may notice a pattern where everything is seen along racial lines and some which have been outright incorrect.

It is alarming that one of the first contribution Mr Kuridrani had made in Parliament was riddled with inaccuracies.
