Muggers Strike Near Caubati Short-Cut
If people do not report such incidents then obviously Police cannot take action: Naisoro
Ashort-cut near Caubati in Nasinu is now a spot where innocent victims are being mugged on a daily basis. Yesterday one victim revealed how mugging and robberies have become prevalent in the area. Davnesh Prasad, 23, endured an unfortunate experience last month after he was allegedly threatened to be killed by six youths.
“It was midnight and I was walking home from work. The boys approached me, one punched my face while another brandished a knife. I just let go of my bag and ran for my life,” he said. He reported the matter to the Caubati Police Post, but was told to lodge his complaint at Valelevu Police Station.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said community posts were manned by one or two community policing officers.
“Each post, wherever they are in Fiji, come under a mother station. In Caubati’s case it is Valelevu Police Station,” she said.
Caubati resident Meli Tavaga said these robbers usually operated in groups at dark spots. “They take advantage of the area not having enough street lights,” Mr Tavaga said.
“My brother-in-law was robbed of his mobile phone two weeks ago by three boys.”
Other residents in the area have encountered mugging incidents, but not all cases were reported to Police.
“Thieves stole my friend’s mobile phone and purse at the Cakacaka Road short cut,” said a woman who opted to remain anonymous. “These muggers know all the short cuts. They commit these daring robberies and get away easily.
“They target new faces to the area. Muggers stay in groups, especially near the corner shops at Kinoya and observe the movement of the people.” Ms Naisoro urged robbery victims to always lodge reports so Police could look into the matter.
“If people do not report such incidents then obviously Police cannot take action,” she said.
“All reports are investigated and there is no strict timeframe for when one will start or be completed.
“While Police conduct night patrols it is wise for individuals to be wary of personal safety and security.”
