Cokomata supports peace, justice and strong institutions
Twenty-one-year-old Timaleti Cokomata will advocate on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 16 which focuses on peace, justice and strong institutions.
The SDGs, otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
The management student from Yasawa said in order for Fijians to promote strong institutions, we must be prepared to take decisive actions. “We cannot hope for sustainable development without peace, stability, human rights and effective governance based on the rule of law,” she said.
“In order for us to promote strong institutions we must also take action.”
Proudly sponsored by Nadi Town Council for the upcoming Nadi Bula Festival she believes that youths must maximise and focus on nuturing then using their individual talents to make progress.
“We are all given special talents. Some are talented at academics,
some are talented with trade work and others in creativity, but if we know our talents and focus on developing them, we will not have a problem finding career pathways,” Ms Cokomata said.
The former Adi Cakobau School student expressed her gratitude in being a contestant.
“I’m so grateful to be part of an event that gives back to the community through charity. Organisers of the festival have given funds over the years to help people with medical problems and for fire victims,” she said.
“It’s truly amazing and I know this will not be the last time I’ll be involved with a charitable drive.”
She listed her hobbies as being adventurous, exploring nature, meeting new people, travelling and looking after children.
As a build-up to the week-long festival 11 contestants vying for the queen’s crown visited the Namaka Market as part of the pre-festival programmes.
The 59th Bula Festival will be held from July 27 to August 3 at Koroivolu and Prince Charles Park.
