Cemetery Expansion Begins
The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has started work on the expansion of the Suva Cemetery which will have 15,000 lots.
FCS Commissioner Commander Francis Kean said work had started in January.
At a press conference yesterday he said the demand for burial plots was increasing, especially for Lovonilase and the New Extension Cemetery in Suva.
At the Suva Cemetery, Commander Kean said there were 15 burials per week and in Nasinu there were 25 per week.
Work at Nasinu, he said, would start next year and when completed
it would have 25,000 lots.
He said there were certain cases in Suva where they had requested the relatives of the deceased to identify family burial plots which could be reopened.
Under the Burial Act, he said plots could be reopened after 14 years. In recent past, he said the FCS had been exercising this practice to meet demands and more importantly to await the completion of civil works at both the Nasinu and Suva Cemeteries.
He said they were trying their best to consider geographical location requests coming especially from the Delainavesi to Wainadoi corridor residents.
He said it was only sensible for them to allot a plot at Lovonilase and the New Extension Cemetery. Commander Kean said that as for other suburbs of Suva ideally, the FCS would normally advice that they use the Nasinu Cemetery. Work on the Nasinu Cemetery will be completed soon.
