Police are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on the case of a couple from the United States of America who died in May while holidaying in the country. David James Paul, 38, an engineer with Lockheed Martin and his wife, Jane Michelle Canalog Paul, 35, had checked into a property on Denarau Island. They later died from a mystery illness.

“The latest development is, we

are working with the FBI on some of the issues that we need to radiate otherwise it is going to be an ongoing process,” said Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho yesterday. “We sought the expertise of US counterparts and they are working on it.”

The couple’s bodies were finally returned to their family in the USA this month.

On May 8 the couple travelled between two states inside the USA (Texas and Nevada) to leave their son with Michelle’s parents. On May 19, they flew within the United States, again - from Texas to San Francisco, California. On May 20, they flew from San Francisco, California to Los Angeles, California then to Fiji.

They flew from the USA to Fiji with no other stops in between. The couple arrived here on May 22.

Mrs Paul died on May 25 at the clinic on Denarau Island and Mr Paul died on May 28 at the Lautoka Hospital. Meanwhile, Brigadier-General Qiliho confirmed that investigations remained ongoing in other murder cases across the country. This includes the Russian couple Yuri Shipulin and Natalya Gerasimova who were murdered on June 16, 2016 in one of the most bizarre and so far unsolved cases in Fiji’s crime history.

And Salesh Chand, 42, the regional manager for Vinod Patel and Company, was found dead in his burnt company car at the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) yard in Lautoka on June 8, 2016.

“I have a team working on the Natadola cases, the murder case in Suva and the case at FSC here. We are making progress and it is not for public information.”
