Stop using plastic bags! That’s the message Mary Snow intends to echo loudly when the Nadi Bula Festival opens tomorrow.

The 21-year-old student will campaign about Sustainable Development Growth number 14 – life below water – during the week-long festival.

She said: “Many Fijians live along the coastal areas and they depend on their marine resources for food and income. And it’s alarming to see the damage caused by plastic itself to our marine life.

“We must stop the use of plastic bags in our towns and encourage recycled bags, compost and recycling of bottles. And it must start from everyone living in the cities and town areas.

“So I challenge all Fijian youths, like myself, to stand up and participate in their local festivals and use the platform to speak out and take

action on what they believe can bring about change.” Miss Snow is pursuing her studies in hospitality and tourism at the ServicePro International Tourism Hospitality Institute.

She also loves the sport of basketball. “I have always been interested in playing basketball from an early age because I used to watch the Fiji reps play at our church courts.” During her school days at Jasper Williams High School in Lautoka she asked her physical education teacher to form a basketball club. The rest was history.

“I’m happy to say that I was a part of the first basketball team representing my school,” she said.

She lists her hobbies as playing basketball and socialising with people.
