Man Charged with stabbing Policeman at Nakasi Station placed on remand
A36-year-old man, who allegedly stabbed a Police officer inside the Nakasi Police Station on the night of June 26, has been remanded in custody. Veramu Dikidikilati appeared before High Court Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe yesterday. He is charged with one count of act with intent to cause grievous harm.
The Police officer, Corporal Manoj Mani, sustained serious injuries after he was allegedly stabbed. Corporal Mani was on duty when the suspect allegedly entered the station and stabbed him on the back of his head and his back with a small kitchen knife. Prosecutor from the Office of the
Director of Public Prosecutions Sujata Lodhia told the court that the State had liaised with a doctor at the remand centre and the doctor had confirmed that the accused was a under medications.
She presented a letter written by the doctor seeking an order for the accused to be examined by a doctor from the Saint Giles Hospital.
Justice Rajasinghe said the remand authorities could take the remand prisoner to the hospital once they get an approval from the commissioner.
He said the court had nothing to do with the remand prisoners being taken to the hospitals.
The matter was adjourned for mention to August 13.
