Sugar Festival Organising Committee chairman Pusp Raj said potential contestants who missed out on registration will be able to register through the open registration this Saturday in Lautoka.

Mr Raj said so far eight contestants had registered, however the committee wanted to give other contenders a chance to take part as well. “The open registration will be held at Tappoo Lautoka from 10am till 12pm, so we encourage young women who want to take part to come and register, but we will narrow it down so that committee members can do the selection,” he said.

He said the annual festival will be promoting healthy living in its theme this year.

“The theme is ‘nutritious meal, healthy living’ and we have told stall owners that we want them selling quality healthy food rather than junk food,” he said He said there would be new activities in this year’s weeklong programme.

“We will be having the Fiji Cancer Society

present, also we are trying to work in programmes for senior citizens to help them feel more appreciated and we will, of course, be having the flower show, baby show and the stalls competition where the winner will receive cash, a participating certificate and a trophy,” he said.

Mr Raj said members of the public would also be able to visit the flea market which would be available at the festival.

“People will be able to buy things cheaply including second-hand clothes also stall spots are selling fast with about 38 already booked their spots and I think some stalls from the Bula festival will also be there,” he said. He also confirmed that the festival had secured a sponsor.

“Vodafone has agreed to come on board to sponsor the festival and we plan to try and engage an organisation that can clean up the ground properly during the festival,” he said. The Sugar Festival will be held at the Churchill Park, Lautoka from September 21 to 28.
