Ensuring the proper development of youths has become a vital concern for the Kalabu Methodist Circuit Bula Raraba Committee. This is an area that needs lots of help as committee members found out over the weekend during the Coral Coast Christian Camp.

With the high rate of crime and peer pressure among youths of today, the committee decided to organise a camp that would cater for youths from different denominations.

The focus of organisers was on youth guidance. Committee chairman Sela Seru said the camp looked at three objectives they believed would

create a change in the lives of the youths who attended the camp.

“The objective during the camp is to encourage youths to be steadfast in Christ, create and build a network between members of the camp and to enjoy being part of the learning process,” Mr Seru said.

He acknowledged the involvement of the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Disaster Management and Metrological Services, Jone Usamate who proposed the idea of such a programme. “Minister Usamate is playing a major role as an adviser to the committee. This shows his utmost support for the development of our youths. “He has been fully committed to the programme and we are thankful to him for being a role model to youths,”

The circuit covers youths from Wainibuki, Nakasi right to Cunningham Stage Three.

Mr Seru said the youths came from different backgrounds.

Some were from broken families and a few have just got out of remand.

“They need proper guidance and support from members of the community. We do not want them to indulge in criminal activities and mix with the wrong crowd,” he said.

“The camp focused on spiritual development. It will not be an overnight change for them, but at least we have taken the initiative to plant a seed of change among participants.” The youth camp is the first of its kind and the committee plans to make it an annual event that can assist in changing youths to become better citizens of the country.”

He thanked Rev Pita Drekilovoni for his support, the Scripture Union Fiji volunteers and the minister for the sponsorship of the camp t-shirts.
