Woman Accused of Importing Marijuana on Strict Bail

Aprominent Suva communicat­ions officer, who allegedly imported illicit drugs, namely marijuana, has been ordered not to reoffend while on bail.

Debrah Annette Kushil Singh, 52, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa in the Suva Magistrate­s Court.

Singh is charged with one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs and unlawful importatio­n of illicit drugs. She was arrested at the Suva Post Office upon receiving a consignmen­t from the United States allegedly containing two candles containing marijuana. The contents of the parcel were tested and allegedly proved positive for illicit drugs.

For the offence of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, it is alleged that Singh on August 5, 2019, at Suva, without lawful authority was found in possession of 1.1 grams of illicit drugs namely cannabis sativa.

For the offence of unlawful importatio­n of illicit

drugs, it is alleged that Singh on August 5, 2019, at Suva, without lawful authority imported 1.1 grams of illicit drugs namely marijuana. Police prosecutor Sergeant Sharmila Lata filed full phase disclosure­s and did not object to the bail. However, she had requested the court to impose strict bail conditions, a reporting condition and sought for order for Singh to surrender all travel documents.

Magistrate Boseiwaqa granted Singh bail on the sum of $300 and two suitable sureties bond of $300 each. He also ordered Singh not to interfere with any of the prosecutio­n witnesses, to surrender her passport and all travel documents and report to the Totogo Police Station in Suva every first Saturday of every month between 6am and 6pm.

Magistrate Boseiwaqa also issued a stop departure order on Singh.

The matter was adjourn to August 21 for plea before Magistrate Deepika Prakash.
