Police to monitor hotspots around the country

Police officers will be patrolling the streets of popular nightspots around the country and keep a lookout for students during the Term Two school holidays.

The Police action has factored in the upcoming two-week school holidays, and the other social gatherings and activities that will take place during the holidays that is expected to draw large crowds in the major town and city areas.

Term Two ends today.

In Lautoka, the force has set up a base in Lautoka city, with Police officers deployed to the area near the former Anupam theatre.

Washdown pub owner Eileen Philitoga said her security guards would also stop school students trying to enter the pub during the holidays.

“Most of them loiter around town and then try to fit in with the big crowds to come into the club, but we do not allow them in and our security guards will be checking for identifica­tion cards for proof that they are above 18 years, otherwise they will not be allowed in,” she said. Yesterday, there was a meeting in Suva between the Police, Suva City Council (SCC), nightclub owners and security officers.

The Fiji Sun has noted that the council has put up street lights in dark spots within the capital city.

Police spokespers­on Ana Naisoro said the safety of minors and members of the public remained the highest priority of the force.
